Senate Phase
Senator Furius addresses the Senate:
I want to honor our esteemed Senator Cunctator for his Naval innovation of hinged planks on our Warships to help us gain Naval Superiority against the Carthaginian ships at the Battles of Mylae, Cape Economus, and at the Aegates Islands. To add to that the successful land Battles of Agrigentum and Panormus which were key victories to secure our new Province of Sicily and taking the upper hand by striping Corsica & Sardinia from Carthage hands as well was brilliant. Congratulations on your Campaign against those Carthaginians and your safe return.
Which leads us now to current affairs. The Peace Terms were fair, we left Carthage with some dignity, and the means to recover as we hoped as an future Ally, but Revenge was more on their minds than Peace. News has arrived that Carthage has taken the City of Saguntum which has an Protection Treaty with us. Although the Carthaginians did not break the Treaty by crossing the Ebro River, this attack on a Saguntum is clearly an attempt to test the bounds of the Treaty and our willingness to sacrifice Saguntum to keep Peace. I can not stand here in good conscious and let Carthage go unpunished for their attack on a City under our Protection. There is more news, Queen Teuta has united the Illyrians and Demetrius of Pharos has built a fleet & an army to take advantage of our pending war against Carthage. Although this Demetrius is no means a threat like Carthage, we should be able to crush his little army with ease, but weather we send our Legions now or later is the question.
In this Senate meeting, we will be deciding on which Senator will run the Armament Concession, the election for the Governor of Sicily, Governor of Corsica & Sardinia, how many Legions to raise for the coming Wars, and weather we send only Flaminius against Carthage or send myself to quell the Illyrian uprising. I believe in Senator Cunctator's plan to fight both wars. Although I believe in raising 17 Legions, even a stronger response against Carthage by sending the Veteran Legion & 22 other Legions with Flaminius against Carthage, and I'll take 3 Legions to put down the Illyrians. A dangerous course, but I'll place my confidence in trained Legionnaires against tribal Illyrians on any field of battle to give one more Legion to Flaminius to help secure a sound victory against Carthage once and for all. I will now turn over the meeting to our new Censor Calpurnius.
Aemilius rises: I fine speech delivered by Furius. A minor objection in that we must first vote for the new Censor but I am sure it is just a formality that the Rome Consul forgot.
Furius is called back up to the center [red face]
I am sorry my fellow Senators, I had given our Supreme Administrator my choice of Calpurnius as the nominee for Censor, but the message of selecting a voting order never reached me. It is no excuse, for I should have known our procedures by now, but my Wife had me entertaining guests at our party, the wine & food was plentiful, and it was late when I finally made it to bed. When I made the morning speech my head was still protesting be awake, my aid had told me Calpurnius had enough votes as the new Censor, and I assumed it was finalized. My apologies to you all for my breach of etiquette and my assumption. Suffice to say that aid is no longer holds his position, and you can see him in the next arena games. Perhaps he is more cut out for Gladiatorial arena than Senatorial proceedings. The voting order will be Valerius, Cunctator, Julius, Aurelius, and myself. Also I would like to reward Julius's successful Campaign with Cunctator in the First Punic war with the next Priesthood. It's good that the Citizens of Rome can hear from experienced veterans how Mars has brought success against Rome's enemies in the field of Battle. Expect future successes in the coming wars against Illyrians and crushing those Carthaginians once and for all. I will NOW turn it over to the voting procedures for Calpurnius as the new Censor. Again my apologies for my lack of awareness.
