“My esteemed senators and colleagues. It is with great sincerity that I apologise for my unexpected absence from Rome in order to deal with some urgent family matters. Unfortunately the wars that are on our doorstep means that we could ill afford this delay but I am grateful for your patience in awaiting my leadership. My time as Consul draws to a close however and we must elect new consuls to deal with these matters. Sadly our numbers are few and the wars are too many for us to deal with them all at the same time but Aurelius will support the suggestions to defeat the Syrians and the Gauls first before turning our attention to the Macedonians.
With this in mind he is proposing we elect the strong leaders Julius (of Arborophilia) and Amelius (of Finlandia) as Rome and Field Consuls respectively to take us forward in the next year. This is no time for self interest or petty squabbles. We must unite behind these two fine young senators and give them our resounding support for the tasks ahead. Senators, voice your support loudly. Julius and Amelius”
