Congratulations to Bill on his win!

End of Game Statements

Dave Hooton (London):  Barcelona cut me off at the knees with the very first card play while Hamburg got off to a roaring start with Crusades. It's never a good idea to get into a dice-off with Chris G., but on Turn 3, I played War on Barcelona and to get a coastal city to break out of the box I was shut into and get into the Mediterranean. I tried my best to slow down a well-played Hamburg, but every time I started to get traction against the runaway leader, his wingman in the west would get me from behind.

Congratulations to Bill on his win, and thanks to Chris H. for running the game.

Chris Geggus (Barcelona):  I'm sure I say every time that I never really got started. I need to find a new excuse. Bill seemed to get a flyer (Crusades do that) and it always seemed to be catch-up for the rest of us. Cards really did not help me this time (see the held Spice card at the end and I had already dropped at least one card, so it wasn't the worst!). No military gains, leaders in wrong areas and resources that just didn't suit me all held me up. Probably a good example of how not to play Barcelona. Well done Bill and thanks Chris H.

Bill Scharf (Hamburg):  This game was completely different than what I expected. Hamburg is definitely the weakest nation, and I figured it would be a real challenge to play. Luck, pluck, and guile would all be needed in copious amounts, would I be up for the challenge, who knew?

Then immediately after the first bid for tokens, I drew crusades, and all my plans went out the window, taking the window and the entire wall with it, because playing a first turn crusades card automatically makes you a contender, you’re running with the big dogs now, the game is yours to lose, et cetera, et cetera. I also got the crusades in epoch ll and in epoch lll, what are the odds of that?

And of course, that meant I had underbid for expansion, enough tokens for Hamburg expansion, not enough for a crusades, and definitely not enough for expansion from both. Yeah I know, I’m complaining about getting dealt a royal flush.

Game went well, I was keeping up with the leaders. Took some heavy punches, Black Death turn 4 in area vi, alchemists gold and civil war in turn 5, (both from Venice), which made me…..think unkindly about him for awhile….but you have to admire the professionalism of those body blows.

London (Dave Hooton) played a spectacular game. Venice (Christopher Hunt) and Barcelona (Chris Geggus) both did well. Paris (Bob Robles) was a neighbor but we didn’t really fight, so I appreciate that, we both had other problems. Genoa (Martin Burgdorf) I didn’t really have much contact with during the game, which was fine with me, we both had multiple problems elsewhere (see list of other players). Chris, as always, thanks for running this monster.

Christopher Hunt (Venice):  Thanks to Chris for running the game.  Congratulations to Bill on his win.  Never got the good money cards, my leader led to Cosmopolitianism kept hitting the brick wall of Hamburg or got my misery under control.  Chris played his game of being second, never hitting the leader so as to to be hit himself, intending to overtake at the end but allowed Hamburg too much of a lead over 20 dominance really Chris even you must have known this was too much.
