GEGS is Growing Expension Generates Subservience
Andy York (Republic of Texas):
Good game all, with Bill pulling getting a good lead on the rest of us
(Congrats!). I thought I’d bottom out after dealing with the Aztecs and
Incas, but the Fanatical Brits saved my bacon in the last Epoch!
Bill Scharf (Iron Brotherhood):
It was a very odd game for me. The first three epochs I was passed
cards that started in Eurasia (aryans, scytheans, and sassanids), only
one had a capital. Not a good start to the game at all. The fourth
epoch I drew the t’ang dynasty and I got to keep it, gasp! The fifth
round I drew first (I guess getting passed bottom of the barrel empires
the first several rounds has its benefits). I got the Holy Roman
Empire, which a past history teacher summarized in one sentence. “The
Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, or an empire”. Epoch 6
was a lucky draw, Spain, it got me access to most the globe except for
the Far East, and the 7th epoch was another lucky draw, Manchu’s, it
was early and gave me access to the Far East.
So….bad luck, followed by good luck on empire cards and dice rolling,
and, I’d like to think, some canny card play of the event cards. That’s
it! The only thing I did was figure out exactly how many points I had
on board position before I started playing the next empire, so I could
maximize points gained that round, and avoid attacking through
difficult terrain whenever possible, attacking at even odds gives me
the heebie jeebies.
Kevin Wilson (Royal Manticoran Historical Society):
I was feeling OK until EVI. Those before me kept so I feared I was the
logical choice for the I&A so I kept too despite Portugal going
late in the turn. By the time I could go I was cleared from most of the
board and the dice finally caught up. There wasn’t much chance after.
This may be the first time I ever remember coming in last!
Congrats to Bill on a nice win. Thanks to Chris for running the game,
always one of my favorites. Thanks to the others for the play. Let’s go
again soon.
Chris Geggus (GEGS):
Another interesting game. Well played Bill. It seemed to be one of
those games where I rarely drew a wanted card and had to rely on being
passed something better - not a good route to success. Also seemed an
unusually high percentage of cards being kept by people, which suggests
a lot of folks were getting what they wanted and living off scraps was
not a good idea. I also struggled to access diverse areas of the board
ie. I never got to North Africa, SE Asia or the New World. All of which
limited my scoring. Every game is different which makes this a fun one
to play. As Kevin said, roll on the next one. Thanks to Chris H. again.
Christopher Hunt (The Greenies):
A good game. Thanks to Chris for running the
game. The 6 player game is better than the 7 player always
that element of uncertainity. Missing Chola and Mughals meant my
Guptas stayed around, but not in Europe unitl late. The choice of
Ottoman taken for fear of something worse meant I was 1 army ahead and
in 5th place choice. Never going to win with Netherlands.
Congratutiona to Bill a twenty point win, emphatic.
Dave Anderson (Romulus & Remus):
Congratulations To Bill on his win. Thanks to Chris for always running
the game nice and promptly. Once again the dice fail me at a Critical
times. Epoch 5 khmers Fail to get into India and my Rebellion to get
into China fail too. Even my one time try for the fleet sinks. Then the
USA on 7 . Having Naval Dominance is not exactly earth shattering for
the Caribbean, and not even getting into S, America. Brutal. Oh well.
Lets try it again. I will win it 1 day.
In the meantime. I will take up bird watching.
