Congratulation to Kieth Marple on his very close victory!
Dave Hooton:
Congratulations to Keith on his victory (although I'm beginning to
regret introducing him to our community :-). It was unfortunate that
the two personal goals that were dealt to me were anti synergistic with
the final two round goals. Thanks again to Chris for running things.
Chris Hibbert: I've played Wingspan once or twice f2f, but this was my first time by email. It was certainly fun and engaging.
I started out with the Food Web Expert, which gave me 2 points each for
birds that eat only worms. This seemed good because there aren't
thresholds, and it doesn't top out at some number. But it turned out
that I didn't draw that many suitable birds.
As far as I could tell through the mid-game, I was one of the top
couple of players, but it's ultimately hard to be sure because of the
hidden bonuses.
My strength for a while was my ability to pick up lots of cards, and
each time I did, I added to my tucked cards. When playing my Pink-Eared
Duck, which forces me to give a card to someone else, I chose Kieth
because he had a similar card (the Green Pygmy Goose), and I thought he
might reciprocate. But as far as I can tell he never activated it, so
eventually I gave them to Christopher instead.
My second Bonus card was the Ecologist, which gives points for the
habitat with the fewest birds, so it rewards evening out the spread of
birds across habitats.
When it got to the end, with 4 turns to go, I had little food, but had
the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, House Wren, Abbot's booby, and
Black-Chinned Hummingbird. The House Wren would let me play a second
bird, and that meant I could even things out at four cards in each
habitat. At the last minute I decided to play the Sulphur Crested
Cockatoo in the forest first to make food cheaper. That, unfortunately,
bollixed my plans, since the House Wren only lets you play the second
card in forest or meadow, and I didn't have any meadow birds left. If I
had played the House Wren first, I would have had another 6 points. The
House wren is 1 VP, but it eats only worms, and played correctly, I
would have gotten another two for the ecologist.
My final card was the Abbot's Booby, which is quite powerful. It lets
you draw 3 bonus cards and then discard any two. It turned out that one
of my three draws was the anatomist, and I had 7 eligible bird cards
for 7 points at the finish to pull within one.
I will have to keep closer track of the interactions next time, but I
did well enough to want to try again. Congratulations to Kieth, and
thanks to Chris.
Chris Geggus:
Last place for me and well deserved. I just never seeemd to get going
for some reason. Well played Kieth (correct spelling?) and Chris for
being well clear of the field. Always fun reading the new birds that
keep appearing, so looking forward to the next one and I may even try a
different strategy next time! Thanks to Chris H. as well.
Kieth Marple:
Well played all, thanks for a fun and really close game. Don't
worry Dave, my little winning streak is about to come to an end as I'm
currently being crushed in games of TM with Turmoil and TM Ares, which
I'm much less familiar with than Wingspan, which my family loves.
And thank you for introducing me to this community and format, I really
enjoy the email format which allows me to lean into my worst (best?)
habits of overanalysis.
I was very lucky in this game in a number of ways; first in getting the
Killdeer in my opening hand, one of the "power four" from the base
game. That allowed me to effectively never have to take the draw
cards action (the Goose was only for the Round 1 goal, sorry Chris
H.!), although both Chris'es were really thwarting my egg-based
strategy with their pink egg-laying-hate cards. Then I was lucky
to acquire a number of star-nest birds towards the end and one card
which laid eggs on all my star-nest birds at the end of the game, which
helped me win or tie on both of the final round end goals. Still
a really close game, and when Chris H. played the Abbott's Booby I
thought I was sunk for sure.
Great game all and thank you again to Chris Hassler for running and organizing!
