And with that, Mars is saved, and all players win! Congratulations on saving Mars.
Kevin Croskery (Thorgate):
Was it too easy or did we just have good engines? Around round 3 or 4 I
thought we were going to lose it but after that it seemed like a
comfortable ride. Crisis is probably better suited to face to face
play, I think we may have struggled a bit with trans Atlantic
communications! Good game all, thanks for playing. And thanks to Chris
H for organising.
Kevin Wilson (The Next Step Initiative):
I definitely agree this is more suited for FTF. While we got there each
time and obviously didn’t miss too many (any?) opportunities, getting
there each turn would be pretty straightforward FTF.
I suspect the ease, later, was more that it was 4-players than strong
engines, while those came along too. We each didn’t need strong engines
so long as our engines didn’t overlap too much. The dummy hand wasn’t
too limiting but maybe we got lucky with that.
And, the order of the final, tier 3 Crisis cards seemed favorable
too. That last, Reglaciation was easy to repair and didn’t eat up
resources needed for the Dwindling Supplies, although we could have
covered it anyway.
I too thought early it was tougher. After we got through the couple of
turns where 1 or more parameters dipped into the red it looked less
challenging but for a while there, it did seem dicey.
One thing I think that helped our engines was the constant dipping and
then recovering parameters allowed TRs to get higher for everyone than
in a regular game where parameters mainly just move in one direction so
TR benefits are limited. That helped generate lots and cash income.
Early I worried mostly about oceans. That was fewer steps down to
danger and all those early cards seemed to keep flipping tiles. But,
once we got some ocean support going that risk mitigate.
I think it would have but a lot more difficult if Action were at risk
from the dummy hand. If it were and came up at the wrong time that
could have been the end.
Still, kind of fun. Might be even more challenging and interesting with
only 3 players and the dummy helping sometimes and not others.
One other thought came right after I hit send.
It may have helped too that with 4 players we generated a lot of VP
tokens. After the first few turns we really never had to worry about
persistent effects so didn’t need to focus on tags played to fix a
card. We’d get a few good tags and let VP tokens do the rest. It
would take more plays to know if our experience was usual or not. And
at the end we had the luxury to let VP tokens do all the work so those
engines could be taken to final stage. If had had to fix Crisis cards
maybe the engines may have been less strong.
I admit for my copy I didn’t remove the Crisis cards from shrink. If I
play again it would be here. It was interesting and did illustrate some
interesting combos but not as much fun as the regular game. At least to
me.
And, since I forgot to say it before, thanks to Chris
for running the game. At times, with all the back and forth and trying
to decide who did what I suspect it got confusing.
Bill Scharf (Interplanetary Cinematics): Thanks for running this game, we’re all in the win column this time!
The early game was much tougher than the late game.
I could see places where we might not have recovered and things could
have gone from bad to worse. Disaster piling on disaster. From Mid-game
on we had a stockpile of victory points, where not being able to build
green or red cards two turns in a row was not a big deal. Plus we were
a group focused on teamwork. Many times during this game I saw people
say “this isn’t any good for me, but if the team needs it….”. Not all
systems work that well, take the US Congress for example (or not). If
we were only able to communicate every other turn, I think we’d see a
BIG difference in how well we’d do. We did a great job in communicating!
Andy York (Mai-Ni Productions): Congrats to the Corporate CEOs who saved the planet!
Actually, thus game went pretty smoothly. I appreciate everyone working
so well together. I do think we probably had a good run with the card
draws that allowed us to build effective engines to deal with each
Crisis as they arose.
Thanks to Chris for letting us enjoy the game!
