End of Game Statements

Dave Hooon (Barcelona):  Thanks, Chris H., for running the game.
Overall, this game was much closer than the last one, with only a $989 difference between first and last as opposed to a $1963 difference last time, with both Genoa and London more than tripling their scores. About a third of my winning margin came on the last turn when all the silk cards came out.
Venice has an early lead, but Barcelona passed Venice after Turn 2 and managed to keep the lead, despite a big surge in Paris towards the end.
I didn't do everything I wanted to do, never getting around to cornering the market on the Fur card I stole from London early on. Nevertheless, it was amusing to see London and Venice fighting over the Fur spaces around the Black Sea.

Chris Geggus (Venice):  Well done Dave. As he said the writing was on the wall early on and I could see Barcelona and Paris disappearing into the distance. Despite the early Crusades nothing seemed to go right after that with poor cards not earning me anything like enough. Maybe the Genoa/Venice peace pact actually hurt both of us with limited expension and extra costings to make avoidance moves. I will be trying to play something different in the next one, just for the fun of it. Thank you to Chris for organising and guiding in his usual efficient manner.

Bill Scharf (Paris):  Thanks for running the game, I used to play this at conventions all the time....quite a commitment to the game given its length!

...A worms eye view of the game...

As usual the big boys at the start of the race were Barcelona and Venice. Genoa, squashed between them, usually has a tough game. I had a bad first turn that put me behind thanks to that first turn civil war (not a friendly gesture starting out!). I played my disasters on the leader (Barcelona), except when he was protected by his advances, then Venice was the recipient of my card play (although that last Black Death play did change my card play strategy a bit). I did pretty well as Paris, but it wasn’t enough to catch Barcelona (Dave) who is one hell of a player....move after move I would shake my head and say “damn he’s good”. England did quite well, picking up a lot of the overseas territories (the maximum you can get as it so happens!), but he didn’t get enough of the right goods cards. Genoa kept fighting and did well given his starting position in my opinion. I’ve only seen Genoa do well when Venice or Barcelona mishandles their position, or if Genoa gets the crusades card early, none of that happened this game. As for Venice (Chris) he was a thorn in my side the whole game, which, given our board position, is be expected. Thanks Chris, you were a great enemy! Grrr.

Christopher Hunt (London):  Thanks to Chris for his excellent running of the game and for his patience with my my self-imposed rules error.  His explanation of the rule was clearer than the printed rules.  Thank again, sorry for my doubting you.
My plan was to go overseas and use the high value areas but did not get the cards and then there were my errors.
