Special Rules

1.  All players have the ability to build a total of 5 settlements, 8 cities, 15 roads, and 15 ships.

2.  The following number tokens are placed in reserve:  2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11.

3.  All initial settlements must be placed on the main island.

4.  Whenever a player places a ship or road next to a hex that does not have a number, a number is randomly drawn from the reserve and placed there.  Once the reserve is exhausted, the player must move a number token from a mainland hex that already has one.  This must abide by the following rules:

   A.  Red numbers (6 and 8) may not be adjacent to each other on the small islands.

   B.  All settlements and cities on the mainland must be adjacent to at least one hex that contains a number.

   C.  The hex that has the number removed must be from one adjacent to one of the player's own settlements or cities.

In the event that one or more the rules are impossible to follow, they may be ignored in reverse order that they are listed.

5.  The game ends when someone gains 18VP.

Initial Settlement Placement

Dave:  Plays a Knight, moves the Robber to the 5 hills space at G15 and steals ore from Chris.  Die roll is 9.  Dave gains 3 brick, Kevin gains 3 lumber, Andy gains 1 grain.  Dave trades 4 ore for 1 lumber, builds roads from G8 to G9, G9 to G10, and G10 to G11 and ships from B3 to B4 and B4 to B5, gaining the longest trade route and 18VP.

End of Game Statements

Dave Hooton:  This has been the first opportunity to play the Groß-Catan scenario (which is how it's spelled in the edition I bought), and perhaps my last, since it was, I'm told, replaced by another scenario in the 2003 edition.

It was a nail-biter for me throughout. The initial placements of Andy's settlements all but guaranteed that one of us would have a miserable game, but a fitting development card and some good rolls on Turn 3 allowed be to break out and get to the first island. Getting to new lands early in this game is important in that you do not have to sacrifice existing production.  Adding to the angst was my belief that Chris G. likely had the 2-VP card. Fortunately, that card had been reduced to 1 VP in later editions, and even better was the fact that a highway inspector cancelled his throughway.

Also of note is that despite my lead in new settlements, Chris G. often had superior production until mid-game due to better numbers. Also, I had no port, but I did a good selection of different products. Also, I had a natural trading partner in Kevin in that we had compatible production, although he drove hard bargains.

Chris Geggus:  Very much a learning curve for me. Haven't played this scenario and, indeed, I'm still learning the Seafarers variant. Didn't pick up until too late that builds on the mainland are of diminishing return once overseas expansion kicks in and Dave hit the ground running on that. Even cities are of short-term value if built on the mainland and they get exposed even more if sitting in isolation. I enjoyed it and fully accepted Dave playing it in his usual highly efficient manner and he deserved the win without doubt. I was satisfied with my set-up and my number diversity gave me a good return throughout the game, but just always a little short. Look forward to trying it again. Thanks to Chris for his excellent GM'ing (shame he spotted my diversion from the rules, shall we say).

Kevin Wilson:  I just realized I never replied for this game’s end.  Congrats to Dave for a nice, hard fought win.  Like Chris I didn’t clue in at first on the importance of getting to one of the islands for the protected production.  Fortunately I did, finally, have the light go off in time to act.  One trade with Chris, when he followed with the monopoly card caught me unaware and after that he was everyone’s target.  He did that trade just right.  Offering less and I would have passed.  Offering more and I would have said “hmmm, what’s he up to?”  But his offer was juuuust right and he reeled me in.  I tried then to upgrade settlements to cities both for the production but for the VP too as space was running out for the rest and I needed ore for cards!  But, time just didn’t allow.
