Congratulatins to Keith on his victory. Thanks to Chris for
running the game. I was slow getting stated. As
always seemed to go on forever with no change to the terminal conditons
then in a rush they all are achieved.
Andy York (Helion):
Snappy game with a Green card heavy draws for me, so not able to get
much going in the Action phase. Did note a missed play in the last turn
that would have garnered me two more VPs, but Keith would still be the
victor - great win there! Thanks for running the fun game Chris.
Keith Marple (Mai-Ni Productions):
Very fun game of Ares as always, playing online here with you all was a
forcing function to get a copy at home (as a b-day present). My
daughter already declares it the definitive TM version, and enjoys both
normal and Crisis mode. The fact that it's at least a
conversation says a lot about the design quality of the game; marrying
TM with Race for the Galaxy works really well.
In this particular game I got the combo in my opening hand of
Experimental Technology, a card I nearly discarded in disgust because
you have to pay a TR to upgrade one phase card as an action, and
Gas-Cooled Reactors, which raises the temp with a discount for every
upgraded phase card. I decided to build around that combo, trying
to upgrade all my cards ASAP in spite of the cost and then spam the
Reactors to make it back. It worked well, and in general I've
found that the blue cards that allow you to raise main parameters as an
action are very good in this version versus the original because they
often give big discounts.

I’m still surprised sometimes about how fast the end game suddenly
moves. Only 2 turns ago we had 3 or 4 ocean tiles and multiple steps of
both the O2 and C° tracks and them suddenly, Mars is ready! I
completely forgot to consider standard actions on the penultimate turn.
Maybe another VP (or 2?) so wouldn’t change the outcome but would have
made a tight game tighter. Unfortunately this time, despite seeing lots
of cards, I just didn’t get many with VP opportunities so had to focus
on TR and just ran out of time. I should have focused on plants a
little earlier instead of building more steel capabilities. I had more
cards for more plant production but by the time it was clear things
were picking up pace I couldn’t get them in play.
Congrats to Keith on a nice, close win. Thanks to the others for the
play and, as always, to Chris for an excellently run game.
